What Is a Planetary Transit?
The term behind every horoscope on this site, explained plainly: what a transit actually is, and why it matters more than your sun sign alone.
A transit is simply where a planet is right now, measured against the zodiac -- and, in a birth chart reading, against the positions it held at the moment you were born.
When astrologers say "Mercury is in Virgo" or "Venus is squaring Saturn," they're describing transits: the ongoing, ever-changing positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets as they move through the twelve signs.
Why transits matter more than your sun sign
Your sun sign is fixed the day you're born. Transits are not -- they're the sky in motion, and they're what actually changes from one day to the next. A horoscope that only references your sun sign is really just describing a fixed starting point; a horoscope grounded in real transits is describing what's happening today, against that starting point.
That's the whole premise of the daily horoscopes on this site: every one is generated from the Sun, Moon, and planets' real, computed ecliptic positions for that day, not from a generic template.
The two ingredients of a transit
Every transit description has two parts:
- Where a planet is -- its zodiac sign and degree.
- What it's doing relative to other planets -- whether it's forming an aspect (a geometric angle, like a conjunction, square, or trine) with another planet.
Fast-moving bodies like the Moon and Mercury shift transits by the day or even the hour. Slow-moving planets like Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto can stay in a single sign for a year or more -- which is why their transits tend to describe longer, generational themes rather than day-to-day mood.
Retrogrades are transits too
When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's point of view, that's a retrograde -- still a transit, just a direction. Mercury retrograde gets most of the attention, but every planet except the Sun and Moon goes retrograde periodically. It's a real, observable astronomical phenomenon (an optical effect of relative orbital speeds), even though its meaning is where astrology comes in.
